Getting to grips with the new DMARC requirement isn’t just a question of getting your DNS records straight; to stay on top of DMARC, you need to set up DMARC reports.

Why will I need to introduce DMARC?

Google has recently announced new requirements for bulk senders to ensure that your inbox is even safer and more spam-free. From February 2024, Gmail will require that bulk senders authenticate their emails, allow for easy un-subscription, and maintain a reported spam threshold. To comply with these requirements, bulk senders who dispatch over 5,000 daily emails to Gmail users must authenticate domains through SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and rDNS, maintain a spam rate below 0.3%, and ensure an easy unsubscribe option.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) is a protocol that uses SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) to determine the authenticity of an email message. DMARC is an email authentication protocol that protects an organization’s email domain from unauthorized use, commonly known as email spoofing.

To be DMARC compliant, bulk senders must ensure that their emails are authenticated using SPF and DKIM, and that they have a DMARC policy in place. The DMARC policy specifies how the receiver should handle emails that fail SPF or DKIM authentication checks. The policy can be set to either quarantine or reject messages that fail authentication checks.

In summary, to be DMARC compliant, bulk senders must:

– Authenticate domains through SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and rDNS.

– Maintain a spam rate below 0.3%.

– Ensure an easy unsubscribe option.
